The Trueblood Chapter will expand their program to Highlands Elementary and River Glen Middle School in northwest Boise, while repeating the program at Riverside Elementary. The costs of these original aquarium systems (about $3,500 each) were shared between the TU, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and the U.S. Forest Service.
Professional fisheries biologists helped with the curriculum. Marshall
Brown (Idaho Power Company), Ted Koch (US Fish and Wildlife Service) and Tom
Frew (Idaho Fish and Game) provided guidance and occasional classroom and
field trip instruction.
While many TU chapters and other fishing clubs in Idaho have a long
experience with these fish tanks, the Ted Trueblood Chapter, on the other
hand, were rookies. “We were very pleased with the results, and we learned
as we went along,” said Mrs. Prange.
PARTNERSHIPS NEEDED Does your business want to be involved in our Trout
in the Classroom program? We are looking for partners to cosponsor these
efforts at the three schools. Contributions from a local business toward
the program will be recognized. If interested, please call Richard Jones at
853-7788 for more information.
Trueblood Board Sets Priorities
The Board of the Ted Trueblood Chapter recently met and made decisions
for funding several major initiatives in the coming year. The board voted
to help salmon advocate Reed Burkholder by reimbursing Reed’s travel and
communication expenses he incurs as part of his tireless campaigning to
remove the four lower Snake River dams and restore Idaho’s salmon and
steelhead runs.
The Chapter will renew its affiliate membership of the Idaho Wildlife Federation and participate in its State Affairs Committee. The Idaho Wildlife Federation is an effective advocate for Idaho’s fish and wildlife at the Idaho Legislature and with the Idaho Fish and Game Commission
As discussed in the lead article of this newsletter, the Chapter will be expanding the Trout in the Classroom project. Two additional tanks will be purchased, along with chilling units and other equipment.
Finally, the chapter will contribute $1,500 to the Idaho State Council of
Trout Unlimited to support statewide efforts on behalf of Idaho’s cold water
resources. The Idaho Panhandle Chapter challenged other chapters to increase
their contribution to the State Council, and offered to match other chapters
dollar-for-dollar. So far, the Trueblood Chapter’s contribution is the
largest response to this incentive.
3rd Annual Fly Fishing Seminar
The Boise Valley Fly Fishers and the Ted Trueblood Chapter of Trout
Unlimited are again working on a winter fly fishing seminar, the 3rd annual,
on Saturday, January 29, 2000. See the display ad in this issue for more
details.
We are looking for volunteers who have some time in the coming weeks to
help pull the event together. If interested please call Andy Brunelle at
343-1510.
COMMENTS NEEDED ON BOISE RIVER PLAN
The Boise River Resource Management and Master Plan will be unveiled to
the Boise City Council on Tuesday, December 7. Comments from Trout
Unlimited members in favor of this plan are needed.
As discussed in our last newsletter, the City's 1993 Comprehensive Plan recognized the need for a river plan to begin dealing with natural resource needs and human use of the river and surrounding environs. With the City's ownership of the Greenbelt and numerous parks along the river Boise Parks and Recreation Department took the lead. Earlier this year the Department formed a Steering Committee with a wide variety of government and private interests to help the Department craft a plan.
The draft plan addresses a wide range of issues. Broad policies for dealing with use of the river, access points, safety, fish and wildlife habitat, and water quality are addressed. A second section identifies specific areas along the river corridor in need of attention or where opportunities exist to enhance the resource or support recreational use of the river.
The plan calls for trout-friendly policies such as Boise Parks working
with other organizations to improve fish habitat in the City, further enhance
fish habitat to mitigate for removal of debris and snags (for summer tuber
safety), and promoting more beneficial flow management in the river.
In addition, there are specific projects identified along the river for
high priority fish habitat restoration such as side channel construction
through the Harris Ranch property (first proposed by Harris Ranch and TU) as
well as a number of sites along the river as candidates for riparian
enhancements.
Trout Unlimited members should take the time to write Mayor Brent Coles
and the City Council and express support of the plan based on its attention
to needs of the fish. Comments should be sent before December 15 to Boise
City Council, P.O. Box 500, Boise, 83701, or email to:
mayor&council@pobox.ci.boise.id.us. The Boise River’s trout will thank you.
