Trout Unlimited News Letter & Meeting
JUNE 14 MEETING PROGRAM
By Rick Prange
We will be having our June 14 meeting on the banks of the Boise River at A
nn Morrison Park. Graham MacKenzie and Rick Williams (Marty Downey has also
been invited) will demonstrate two-handed spey casting. We need a real
flowing river to show the technique. Spey casting is growing in popularity
as an effective approach to take steelhead on the fly and Graham and Rick
will wade the river and show us how it’s done. I’d like to try it myself, so
I plan to bring some waders. We will also be doing conventional casting on
the park lawn, so bring a rod or two to join in on the fun. We will be
located just downstream of the footbridge that crosses the river. Enter the
east side of the park on Royal Blvd. (turn right off of 8th Street just
before it runs into Capital Blvd). See you there.

JUNE NEWS
Cutthroat Curiousity Causes Collaboration: Building Support for Bear Valley
Westslope Cutthroat Study
In our last newsletter we announced that the Ted Trueblood Chapter obtained
an Embrace-A-Stream grant from national Trout Unlimited for cutthroat trout
research in Bear Valley Creek. The Lowman Ranger District of the Boise
National Forest is leading an effort (with Idaho Fish and Game and TU) to
study the migratory habits of westslope cutthroat trout in the Bear Valley
Creek system. EAS funding will help pay for radio tags to be inserted in
adult cutts. The fish would then be tracked from the air to determine where
westslope cutthroats range in the upper Middle Fork Salmon River in central
Idaho.
The research grant application was developed by the Lowman Ranger District
and submitted by the Ted Trueblood Chapter. Roughly $4,500 was requested,
and $2,250 was awarded. Competition nationally for EAS grants was especially
keen this year. The research will go in to full swing in October. Resear
chers will be surgically implanting adult cutthroat trout with radio
transmitters and following their movement through out the year. The primary
goal is to determine where and when the fish are spawning and whether or not
they migrate into the Middle Fork of the Salmon River during the winter.
The Ted Trueblood Chapter has written to the more than two dozen licensed
outfitters on the Middle Fork Salmon River asking outfitters who would like
to give back to the resource by "sponsoring" a cutthroat trout. Sponsers
have been asked to purchase one or more radiotransmitters (tax deductible
donation at $175 each).
You can be a cutthroat sponsor too! Financial contributions can be made to
this effort. See the reply form on page 3. Donors of $175 can name their
own fish! We plan to have a web site where sponsers cancheck the latest
updated position of their fish. Sponsors may also choose to have a science
class from a local school participate by following the fish movement
throughout the year. We will provide additional educational information to
integrate cutthroat behavior with aquatic ecology.
Your participation will help ensure enough radio tags are purchased and
implanted in adult cutthroats. The more fish tagged, the more we will all
learn about the migratory behavior of the westslope cutthroat, Idaho's state
fish. A reply form appears in this newsletter for those who are interested
in contributing to this cause.
I am interested in helping with cutthroat research. My contribution will
fund radio tags. Enclosed is a contribution. (Make checks to Ted Trueblood
Chapter).

Letters to the Chapter
Ted Trueblood Chapter TU
Richard Jones, President
Dear Richard,
The Northeastern Nevada Chapter of TU would like to invite your chapter
members to our One Fly Tournament Wilson Reservoir on June 24th, 2000. In
the past Nevada TU members have meet members of your chapter while fishing
along the Northern border of Nevada and we feel that this function would help
build a bond between Idaho and Nevada Chapters. If there is anything I
can do for you. Please call me at my home 775-635-5567, or contact Matt
Holford our Nevada Council Executive Director at his office at 775-778-3159.
We can also send you printed applications.
NNCTU One Fly Tournament - June 24th, 2000. The Annual NNCTU One Fly
Tournament will be held at Wilson Reservoir on June 24th, 2000. The fisher
person will be allowed to use one fly for the tournament, if the fisherperson
looses their fly they are out. The top three prizes for the tournament are a
pontoon boat, fly rod and reel, and a guided fly fishing trip.
Tight Lines
Dave Best,
Chapter President
Hi Richard and Andy;
I meant to write you both soon after your banquet to tell you that Kathy and
I really enjoyed it. Kathy had been contemplating taking me on a guided
fishing trip this fall until your banquet rolled around. She took great
interest in the presentation of the activities that TU performs, particularly
the Trout In the Classroom project. She said to me, "I'd rather have my
money go to THESE guys (rather than to some outfitter)". So that is why we
spent $500 on the Deschutes trip. Her money, not mine!
I guess the story here is to keep up the good work and it helps to create
value for people by letting them know where their money goes! It was like a
stockholder's meeting that was actually fun to attend!

SILVER CREEK PROJECT A ROUSING SUCCESS
The Ted Trueblood Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Emmett Ranger District
of the Boise National Forest held its stream project May 20-21 at the Silver
Creek Plunge Resort. Restoration activities included both temporary and
permanent riparian fence construction, and rebuilding the abutments on the
main bridge across Silver Creek to the resort to provide for handicapped
access. Some spot work with jute log "waddles" also occurred to spur some
streambank stabilization.
Over a dozen members of the Trueblood Chapter participated. The Emmett
Ranger District treated everyone to a barbeque after a day of hard but
rewarding work. The most hardy volunteers stayed over and did some more work
on Sunday.
Chet Bowers made the trip and took some nice photos which we will post on our
web site, www.idfishnhunt.com/tutedt.htm. The Emmett Ranger District also
had photographers on site documenting the work done and the progress made to
date.
HELP SAVE MONEY WITH EMAIL
We would like to being emailing our monthly newsletter and meeting notices to
Ted Trueblood Chapter members who have email. To date, 80 or so people on
our email list have received both email and regular mail versions of our
monthly newsletter. Please send us your email address if you have one. You
can send a message to tutedtrue@aol.com.
Increased printing and mailing costs and preparation time, are driven by the
increased membership of the Ted Trueblood Chapter. Growth of the Chapter
parallels the national group, with current membership up from 350 to 475.
Trout Unlimited has grown to 125,000 nationally, up from 110,000 in the past
year.
We will be very judicious in our use of email so that members are not
inundated with email from the Chapter. Monthly emails would be the norm. We
will also not share the email list with other organizations.
July Squaw Creek Project
The Ted Trueblood Chapter will have a stream project at Squaw Creek, north of
Emmett. This project will be a riparian fencing weekend on July 29-30
(Saturday, Sunday).
Activities will include flagging the line, brush removal, placing braces on
trees for corners, stringing the electric tape, setting posts and clips, and
placing weights along the tape to ensure there are no high spots. We will
also install the ground, fencer, and battery, and once turned on, check to
make sure the fence is hot. For the weekend we will need 10-15 people.
The Emmett Ranger District intends to construct two additional riparian
exclosures using electric fence. The purpose of this effort is to protect
critical Bull Trout spawning habitat and to improve streambank stability,
riparian vegetation condition, and fish habitat in general.
