February 16 Meeting

Wood River Redband Trout: A Unique and Resilient Legacy

of Idaho’s Native Species

[This is a rescheduled meeting and at a different location and weekday then normal]

Many of us have experienced the terrific trout fishery of the Wood River in central Idaho. But when you have brought a salmonid to hand how many have thought there may be a unique and important heritage to these denizens? As research into the redband trout in this area has progressed scientists are finding a distinctive history of the trout inhabitants in the Wood River Basin. We will get the newest information from genetic studies and potential implications for management of the population.

For our February 16, 2023 meeting we will have a presentation by Matthew Campbell, the Fisheries Genetics Program Coordinator with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and lead author of a forthcoming paper on Wood River trout origins. Matt is based at the Eagle Fish Genetics Lab [www.eaglefishgeneticslab.com] conducting research to provide comprehensive genetic information to address central questions related to the conservation and management of Idaho’s native fish species (one of five sections under the IDFG Research Division).

Yes, this meeting is a mulligan since we had to cancel our January 11 meeting.

Full House for IF4

Election night, November 8th: a safe harbor for 120 people that evening was a brewpub in downtown Boise. This was our regular Ted Trueblood Chapter meeting, but we moved it up one night and worked with our hosts at White Dog Brewery and with the International Fly Fishing Film Festival to put on a showing of the 2022 IF4 film.

While attendees enjoyed a cold brew or two and some snacks while viewing the film, another purpose for the event was an official welcoming for the new Boise State University Fishing Club.

Boise State University students from the new fishing club. This is part of the TU Five Rivers program. Faculty advisor Ti Macklin is second from right.

Door prizes from the Boise State Fishing Club and financial check presentation from Trout Unlimited was part of the program along with the film.

Three different screens were available for viewing.

Sept 24 Project

The weather is helping us out and now is the time to do some stream restoration work.

We have a project on Warm Springs Creek here in Boise. We have previously had several work activities at this site. So joining us for these projects will allow you to see the fruits of our/your labor on previous efforts.

September 24th, this coming Saturday.

We will be weeding around the trees and willow we planted last winter and early spring. There is a significant amount of reed canary grass and purple loostrife and these invasive plants need control. Some work tools will be provided. But it is likely we will do a lot of hand pulling.

Time Line:   Starts at 10 AM and will last about 2 hours. If you have them please wear waterproof boots. the area along the stream is fairly muddy.

Where to park and where to work.

To RSVP please email tutedtrue@aol.com.

Sept. 20 Volunteer Event

Volunteer event number 3 at Marianne Williams Park:

Tuesday, September 20th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm

We would love some help pulling noxious weeds, wrapping trees to mitigate beaver damage, closing unnecessary social trails and picking up trash along the river bank at the park. The more volunteers we have, the more of these goals we will work towards. We will be meeting in the parking lot at 5:30 on September 20th.

This is the first volunteer event we’ve had in the evening, and we would love to see you there!

Bring your fly rod for some evening fishing following the event if you’d like. Email Trevor@elevateflyfishing.com if you have any questions or to RSVP.
